Professional Experience

Mr. S. Mohan Kumar brings over five decades of multidisciplinary experience in geology, hydrogeology, and remote sensing. He began his career at the Kerala State Department of Mines and Geology (1967–1977), where he worked on mineral exploration, reserve estimation, and regulatory oversight. He then joined the Kerala Ground Water Department (1977–1980), contributing to the development of groundwater resources and the design of recharge structures.

From 1980 onward, he played a pivotal role in the Kerala State Land Use Board, collaborating with key institutions such as the Space Applications Centre, Ahmedabad. His landmark contributions include:

  • Land use planning for Idukki district using aerial photography
  • Hydrogeomorphological mapping in Kasargode
  • Generation of thematic layers for groundwater prospecting
  • Panchayat-level planning based on natural resources
  • Coastal ecosystem studies and landslide zonation mapping

Between 1999 and 2004, Mr. Mohan Kumar led multiple World Bank–funded Jalanidhi Projects under AGES and KRWSA (Kerala Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency). These projects focused on groundwater mapping, recharge planning, and sustainable water supply systems.

He has also played a key role in conducting Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Environmental Management Plan (EMP) studies for a variety of initiatives, including:

  • Iron ore projects in Calicut
  • River-based water supply schemes for KINFRA
  • Small hydel project evaluations in Pathanamthitta
