Cherian Mathew Thuruthamadathil, based in Kurichi, Chingavanam, is a veteran agricultural journalist and a passionate advocate for sustainability. With over four decades of experience in agricultural communication and grassroots engagement, he has played a vital role in promoting both traditional and modern farming practices across India.
Beginning his career as a farm journalist writing in Malayalam, Cherian focused on a wide range of subjects-from indigenous crops and native livestock practices to evolving methods in sustainable agriculture. His commitment to preserving native knowledge systems has taken him to agricultural universities, veterinary and forestry institutions, horticultural colleges, and botanical gardens throughout the country.
From 2014 to 2024, he served as Lead Consultant in Agricultural Communication at Culture Shoppe Pvt. Ltd., where he curated and documented practices in eco-friendly farming. He continues to contribute to the organization as a senior consultant.
Since 2018, Cherian has actively promoted the Miyawaki method of afforestation, with a focus on urban forestry and agroforestry. His unique ability to identify and catalogue over 600 native plant species-especially those endemic to the Western Ghats—is the result of extensive fieldwork and self-guided study. His deep knowledge of indigenous flora, combined with his communication skills, has made him a key figure in afforestation and ecosystem restoration projects.
